After reading Creating Capabilities it got me think on what is human dignity. It seems that the concepts of possibilities or in Nussbaum's lingo capabilities are linked to dignity. I like her thoughts on the idea that looking specifically at the cultural and how it relates to the problems and possible solutions is key. (She sites an example for religious freedom and Germany). I wonder if this concept however can be broken down to a smaller scale. For example would the solution to public education differ for different cultural groups in the US. Everyone I think would agree that the answer would be no. This begins to call into if human dignity, though important, is more conceptual and harder to implement. This may be why human rights is an easier term to implement in problem solving. Nussbaum's solutions seem idealistic, but can this idealism spur action is the real question.
more to come....
